Many nursing students intern in school to gain additional clinical experience. Throughout their nursing internship, student nurses will shadow a nurse mentor in a patient care setting, such as a hospital, for approximately 10 weeks.
Under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN), interns perform basic patient care such as hygiene, mobility and other activities of daily living. Depending on the comfort level of the supervising nurse, more advanced nursing skills may be performed as the internship progresses.
When starting a nursing internship, take advantage of all available learning opportunities.
Set and share goals and expectations
For example, if you want to improve your intravenous (IV) skills before graduation, share that goal with your charge nurse. Don't hide errors
As an intern, you don't need to know everything, so be honest about the skills you're not good at. Sometimes mistakes may be made, always be honest with the charge nurse about mistakes and use them as learning opportunities.
Don’t be defensive when you receive feedback
When receiving constructive feedback from other nurses, take the time to be self-reflective rather than defensive.
Don't be too hard on yourself
As a nursing student, you feel like you have a lot to learn in a short period of time. But remember, skill and clinical judgment will come with experience, so be patient with yourself until then.
